Alan Taylor's Review

I’ve long held the belief that many of Paul’s songs would suit a Mediterranean treatment and lo-and-behold, here we are – MINOAN BLUE ! Recorded in Crete with local musicians – Gregory Iosifelis (Congas, Djembe, Cajon), Alexandros Arabatzoglou (Acoustic Guitar) and Evangelos Tsagkarakis (Cretan Lyra, Mantolin, Loute) – with Paul himself, (Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitar and Harmonica), it really is a different sound to what we’ve heard previously, but in a very good way.

‘Vision Of You’, one of my favourite numbers is the opening track and bears out my ‘Mediterranean Dream’ perfectly, as does ‘Listen To Reason’, a number you may recall was originally on Paul’s ‘Houdini’s Moon’ album back in the 90s.

There are two brand new songs on the album ‘CameThe Man With The News’ and ‘Some You Lose, Some You Win’. Both are excellent! ‘Some You Lose, Some You Win’ reminded me somewhat of The Jigilo Jug Band, the best of all of Paul’s bands for me. What a shame, we only had the 12” EP, ‘Live FromThe Limping Whippet’ to remember them by. I’ve always hoped that maybe there was an album lying in the vaults somewhere. Re-workings of old favourites also benefit from the ‘Med-Sound’, with songs like ‘Hey Hey’, Gypsy Davey’, ‘Live For Today’ and ‘That Old Dust Storm’ completing the package.

It’s always welcome news when word of some new recordings by Paul comes through, and ‘Minoan Blue’, will I’m sure, be a great addition to your collection, and at a VERY reasonable price - £7.50 + P & P.

Great stuff!
